superdome show

this week i had the amazing opportunity to perform at the iconic Superdome in New Orleans LA

i started the show off with my big illusion called “the storm”.  it was cool to be able to do such a symbolic illusion in a building that is remembered mostly by hurricane katrina just a few years ago.

we also did a few other illusions and stunts to top it off. it was a huge hit for everyone, we got a standing ovation from the 28000 people who were there. i was having the time of my life.

i just posted some pictures here on my facebook

The Illusion of India

Recently when I was India, I saw a land filled with illusion and mystery. The type of illusion and mystery that most times ignores reality and some times defies the odds.

You see. 40% of the population lives in deep deeep deeeeeep poverty. Making less than $100 a month. The population of India is 1.1 billion. Roughly 440 million people living in poverty. The USA has a population of 300 million and has 3 times the landmass of India. Are you getting the picture?

You see… when we stayed at our nice quiet walled-in hotel. There was an illusion that India was a pristine and quite as the security of the hotel. But when we left the hotel, just 100 yards down the road were people living in a slum hand to mouth and in the most horrible conditions I have ever seen. Go further down the road and you come to a condo neighborhood. It was nice… but just in front of the condos was yet again another slum that stretched for a half a mile. When the condo owners were asked about the slum under their noses their reply was… what slum? There’s no slum there…. And yet there were rows of houses made of bamboo frames with cloth or plastic for walls.

Not only did the condo owners refuse to acknowledge there was a slum right next to their condos, but they also lived in the illusion there was nothing wrong it.

We as people tend to ignore what is right in front of us forcing our minds to think it’s something else or that it really doesn’t exist.

When you see an illusion from Brock, he is tricking your mind to believe there is something else going on but actually right under your nose the reality of an illusion comes to light. You think one thing but when another is happening.

I walked into India seeing beautiful people living in a beautiful country, but the more I saw, the more the illusion went away. Underneath all the beauty was people living in slums where prostitution, sex trafficking, drugs, and sickness prevailed. A place where 1% of the population is Christian and the majority of the population is Hindu.

It’s a dark world where the illusion is everything seems to be fine.

However… another illusion stood in front of me as I walked through these slums. We would come to a home that was a 6×4 room with 4 people living in it. It was in the middle of the slum with people and darkness all around. A home so small the men slept outside on the sidewalk while the women of the house slept inside. This was a tough thing to see.

The illusion was forming right before my eyes… but as we dug a little further, this was a family filled with Christ because of their daughter being sponsored in the Compassion program just a few minutes walk from their home. They were the shining light in this slum filled with darkness. People were turning from Hindu and turning to Christ.

The community was and is changing from the inside out.

So… The illusion works in reverse as well. The slum appeared to have no hope living in it… and yet it was there, working silently and slowly to bring others to know the reality of whom Christ really is and to show them their Hindu religion… is just an illusion.

create, then practice

i have some time off right now. i am taking advantage of this time to create new routines and practice. usually the creating part comes very naturally but practice takes much more effort. i have some really cool ideas that i have been excited about for next years show. now that i have a few weeks off my priority is too practice until i cant get it wrong.

ya know, if a musician gets one note wrong most people do not notice. those that do notice extend a reasonable amount of grace to the performer. if a magician gets it wrong even for a second, the effect is ruined and the audience has no respect or interest. if a painter misses a stroke of the brush then the artist can either brush over it and cover the mistake or even start over. the magician is live and vunerable on an open stage, and if it goes wrong he is in trouble. there is no do overs.

this motivates me to practice and perfect my art. i want to bring mystery, and wonder, and astonishment to my audience. therefore you will find me working hard on my days off of the road. i will be getting ready to bring you a show that you will never forget.
